Relive the Epic of the Ramayana TrailSriLankan Airlines · 3.6 lakh views
For millions of Indian families, Lanka is not a destination. It is part of a story they grew up with. The island has a trail of sites associated by tradition with the Ramayana, and they fit neatly into a 7 to 10 day yatra.
| Site | Area | Associated with |
|---|---|---|
| Sita Amman Temple | Seetha Eliya, near Nuwara Eliya | Where Sita is said to have prayed during captivity |
| Hakgala Botanical Garden | Near Nuwara Eliya | Identified by tradition with Ashok Vatika |
| Ravana Falls and Ravana Cave | Ella | Linked to Ravana in local legend |
| Divurumpola | Near Nuwara Eliya | Traditionally the site of Sita's agni pariksha |
| Munneswaram Temple | Chilaw, west coast | An ancient Shiva temple linked to Rama's prayers |
| Ussangoda | South coast | Associated in folklore with Hanuman |
| Rumassala | Near Galle | Believed to be a fragment of the Sanjeevani mountain |
Veg and Jain meals are easy to arrange along the route with notice. Large family groups usually travel by mini coach with a Hindi or Tamil speaking guide.
Sites associated with the Ramayana include Sita Amman Temple, Hakgala (Ashok Vatika), Ravana Falls and Cave in Ella, Divurumpola, Munneswaram Temple, Ussangoda and Rumassala.
Seven days covers the main sites at a comfortable pace. Ten days adds beaches or Yala and suits elderly travellers better.
